This ready to wear collection, is one that most pieces pay homage to 80’s- 90’s American fashion designers and pioneers; we see the inspiration used in most prints and designs in this 2020 runway show. These designers are Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan. Although the collection was highly inspired by the beforementioned American classics, we can see a twist of Wang in each piece and more than anything in the color palettes used.
Having this in mind, Wang used an American monument, the Rockefeller center for his show, a perfect venue to showcase unapologetic and empowering pieces with influence to great American designers. The show carried four themes throughout, each of which represented or had an air of inspiration from the designers explained below:
As the show started we saw iconic pieces inspired by Donna Karan, with an array of bold shoulder designs an d stretch jersey body suits flashbacking a signal of power and women empowerment in her ground breaking early collections.
We saw a couple of logo tees, iconic 90’s light blue washes and cant forget to mention the usage of underwear as part of the outfit, a classic Calvin Klein inspiration.
Whereence we then saw, a lounge and chilled out aesthetic, with logos with a hint of Calvin on them in pieces like tanks and effortless yet highly detailed wears.
Within the show we saw fabrics and designs made popular and mainstream by Ralph Lauren, we saw a classic Americana style pieces along some Western looks with leather and fringe bringing a casual equestrian look into the mix.
And finally the show ended with a light neutral pallete and healivly logo’d pieces which has been reported to be taken from pieces of Tommy Hilfiger as inspiration for this segment.
Having used iconic American designers as muse and inpiration fom the whole collection, Wang made sure to depict America as what it is a huge melting pot of cultures and races, which was replicated to be the cast of models used in the show.
Something I loved from the collection is the all the throwback pieces Wang designed from the 90’s and the attention to detail he had when choosing materials, textiles and designs. We see a mix of 90’s fashion with a hint of todays’ style and way of dressing. Which in my opinion makes this whole collection as timeless as can be. These undoubtably could be pieces our grandchildren can use to look vintage or have a classic air of vintage fashion with a sense of timelessness.
