What you’re about to read, is a huge triumph, we haven’t heard much of, specially the historical importance of it. You might be wondering, what is this accomplishment Rihanna is doing that’s never been done, she is bringing more inclusivity and not only bending gender rules, but race and age rules, in the next paragraphs we can go more into this history making moment in fashion.
This has been a well kept secret for the past year, yes, a lot of us in the fashion industry have heard bits about it specially after the Fenty Lingerie launch, but today Rihanna’s brand Fenty has made splashes all over social media and the internet in the launch of the first Fenty collection in collaboration with historical house LVMH. Why, you might be asking yourself into why I mentioned this was a history making moment.... well ladies and gents, Rihanna worked her way to be the first black woman to be the head (both CEO and Creative Director) of an LVMH brand also, managed to bring her brand ne’er LVMH which last brand introduced was Christian Lacroix in 1987.
Harnessing the power of holding all of these prestigious careers, Rihanna is also one of the muses for her clothing line, having a massive following is the key of Fenty’s success and much of her success deals with being true to herself in all matters of her career.
Having herself as the muse for her company, she knows her target demographic to the T. Rihanna acknowledges, she is a trend setter thus, we see much of her signature style in a lot of pieces in her collection, not to mention, colors that fit and enhance a big range of skin tones.
She knows when and how to break the rules to make her outfits memorable ones and always having a signature that we know is hers oversized yet always with a sillouhette that sparks attention to curiosity, this have made her a global style icon and a huge source for inspiration.
As being unique and different is part of her brand, you wont be expecting a traditional runway show for this one, since it’s after all a surprise collection, something she did do as expected is that she is competing on both quality and prices with not only LVMH brand but with the fashion world.
So, you might be asking yourself what to expect from this collection, not only are the pieces previewed in this page but, the consumer will expect the alternative from choosing from sizes 0 - 16 yes, when she launched this, she wanted to make sure that much like her lingerie collection this also, appeals to mostly everyone, having huge inclusivity in its sizes, designs and feminine silhouettes. This collection features; futuristic shades, fashion forwards classics and even footwear, most of these pieces will stricke a chord with masses of fans when the collection goes on line in only a few days in May 29. Camp; could be defined as, a sensibility of irony and non conformance and for that reason, you can incorporate it into a potentially ripe and resonant topic for today's social and political climate.
Camp, can be considered a characteristic that can be found in every extreme corner of our reality. From the dangerous consequences of climate change, to the bold over abundances of capitalism, and the chaos of politics (not only in the USA but in the world), there's almost too much to react to with irony these days, making the topic of camp in essence an embarrassment of riches.
For those curious on the actual history behind, “Camp: Notes on Fashion, it was named in reference to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”.
In an industry that succeeds on statement pieces, beating the latest trends and still keeping a unique presence, we mostly see contemporary fashion brands and designers, bringing “camp” to mainly the luxury market and to a pop-influenced demographic. Some excellent examples of this can be, Demna Gvasalia who rose to fame with Vetements and now the head of Balenciaga, she has designed perfect examples in her past collections for both brands, having turned Internet-driven irony into high art, with his 2016 collections featuring logos ranging from DHL and Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, and a leather weekend bag aping Ikea's 99-cent Frakta shopper.
Other recognizable examples are the works of Moschino then and today, under Jeremy Scott's playful eye, which has had sent sartorial interpretations of McDonalds, Spongebob Squarepants, and Barbie down the runway, not to mention even popular cleaning supplies like “Windex”.
Now, with no more hesitation, I’d like to share with you the most iconic pieces, that made their way through the 2019 Met Gala pink Carpet. Please comment below on those you liked most or took your attention!
